we headed down the road to our first adventure, the
Royal Gorge Bridge - constructed in 1929 @
$350k, $100k over budget
it was the worlds highest
suspension bridge (until 2001); it is still the
highest in the USA.
It has a length of
1,260' long and 18' wide, 1,262 boards, 1,053' above the
Arkansas River
photos from the river are
from a trip 10 years ago - none of us went down to the
bottom this year
Royal Gorge Promotional Video
;
we had to call ahead before we arrived - so Security
would be ready for us.
They had us park and stage in the bus drop-off lane
Doug had booked a special exception with the park to drive
across the bridge, now closed to auto traffic since
the fire of 2013 - only pedestrians traffic now
Glenda & Mary opted to not ride
across - they volunteered to take photos so they rode
across in a golf cart to the far side - then back later
While they were waiting on us to drive across, they
saw the wild mountain goat
crickety creak pop went the wooden bridge boards
as we
drove across
A few additional photos (36)
once on the other side,
we turned around, then came back down towards the
bridge for our return drive
different view coming across each way
...and the
boards made the same sounds
Video coming soon - come
back and see it
the Ranger escorted us to Lot B and they shuttled us down
via Golf Cart
...plenty of good photo opportunities
it seems like a long bridge when you stand back and look
at it
too funny
we rode the Gondolas across to the other side
...some rode it back
1,095 feet from the bridge down to the water
...it
sure looks further down than that!
the majority of us decided to walk back across the bridge
group photo with the larger group - some turned around and
went back to the gondolas
the group that walked the bridge
it was an on-your-own lunch today - some opted for the
BBQ on this side of the bridge & others the Cafe at the
visitors center side of the bridge
hey ...we know those people - they are part of our
cruise group
